NCAA Investigating Top Kentucky Recruit Nerlens Noel

A New York Times report says that the NCAA is investigating Kentucky-bound Nerlens Noel, the nation’s No. 1 recruit.

The NCAA sent two members of its enforcement staff to Massachusetts this week to inquire about Nerlens Noel, the nation’s top basketball recruit who committed to Kentucky last month. This is according to a report from The New York Times released Tuesday night.

The investigation reportedly surrounds Noel’s freshman and sophomore seasons at Everett High School and his relationships with Chris Driscoll, a former Providence assistant, and Errol Randolph, a former substitute teacher at Everett High who has a connection with agent Andy Miller. Noel now attends the Tilton School in New Hampshire.

In addition to those relationships, the NCAA is also reportedly looking into Noel’s finances and a pair of unofficial visits taken earlier this year to Kentucky and Louisville. Neither visit was paid for by the respective university.

Tilton headmaster Jim Clements said he has not heard from the NCAA, but “would not be surprised if they turned up.” He said that while Noel was on track to graduate, he wasn’t sure if he’ll qualify academically for a scholarship.

At Kentucky, Noel, a 6’10 center, is expected to fill the hole left by consensus national Player of the Year Anthony Davis, who recently announced he was headed to the NBA after one season in Lexington. Noel announced his intent to become a Wildcat on April 11 on national television.
