Duke Blue Devils coach Mike Krzyzewski announced Thursday during a press conference that rising senior guard Andre Dawkins will redshirt the 2012-13 season. The plan is for Dawkins to play the 2013-14 season as a fifth-year senior.
Duke Guard Andre Dawkins Will Redshirt The 2012-13 Season
Duke guard Andre Dawkins will redshirt the 2012-13 season in order to properly deal with the passing of his older sister.

"It's a time for him to step away," Krzyzewski said. "It's the right thing. We're doing the right thing."
After widespread speculation that Dawkins had left the team, Duke sent out a release in April stating that Dawkins was still a member of the team but that he could redshirt the 2012-13 season.
The reason for Dawkins’ hiatus is reportedly grief over his sister’s passing in December 2010. Lacey Dawkins died in a car accident on her way to a Blue Devil home game.
“He’s dealt with a lot,” Dawkins’ father, Andre Dawkins Sr., said back in April. “It’s been tough. It hasn’t been easy at all. With the fast pace of playing high-level basketball, you don’t really get the time to deal with things like that.”
Dawkins averaged 8.4 points and 2.1 rebounds per game for Duke last season, but displayed the same inconsistency that plagued his first two seasons in Durham. He averaged 12.6 minutes per game as a freshman on the Blue Devil team that won the national championship in 2010.
