Georgia Tech freshman guard Corey Heyward will miss the entire 2012-13 season after tearing a ligament in his left knee during a pickup game, Yellow Jackets head coach Brian Gregory announced Monday.

Heyward, the son of the son of the late NFL star Craig “Ironhead” Heyward, signed with Georgia Tech after spending one season at Hargrave Military Academy. He was considered a three-star prospect by Rivals.com

“I committed because it was the best decision for my family,” Heyward told the Atlanta Journal Constitution back in March. “It has great academics and a prestigious basketball program. Coach [Brian Gregory] has really started a movement to get it back on track, and I want to be part of it.”

After originally signing with Morehead State in 2011, Heyward opted to spend a season at Hargrave with the hope of attracting some higher profile schools.

Heyward, who enrolled at Georgia Tech in May, will have surgery on the knee within the next two weeks. Gregory called the injury “a temporary setback.”
