Michael Haynes, a member of Iona’s nine-player recruiting class of 2012, was shot and killed Thursday night in Chicago.

Iona signee Michael Haynes was shot and killed while trying to break up an argument in his hometown of Chicago on Thursday night.

Police say Haynes, 22, was shot in the wrist, chest and lower back after a fight over a stolen necklace broke out near his home. Acquaintances dropped him off at MetroSouth Medical Center, where he was declared dead at 6:25 p.m.

Haynes first attended UTEP, but never played in a game before transferring to Indiana Hills Community College. He averaged 6.9 points and 4.5 rebounds per game last season, enough to catch the eye of Tim Cluess who made Haynes one of his class of nine 2012 signees.

“He was an innocent victim, very loved by everybody,” Hayne’s cousin, Kandice Blouin, told the Chicago Sun-Times. “He was our meal ticket. He was going to heal this hood and they took his life.”

Haynes was a prep star at Chicago’s Washington High School, where he averaged 17 points and 22 rebounds as a junior. Following that season he was rated as the No. 11 player in the state of Illinois by ChicagoHoops.com.
