Marquette has reported a possible rules violation involving its men’s basketball program to the NCAA, athletic director Larry Williams said Thursday.

Williams did not disclose the nature of the violation, though a source told the Milwaukee-Wisconsin Journal Sentinel hat the issue could be a secondary recruiting violation.

“Recently, during the athletic department’s normal course of business, we discovered information regarding a possible NCAA rules violation involving our men’s basketball program,” Williams said in a statement. “Marquette University takes these matters seriously. Upon learning the information, we followed established protocols and reported the matter directly to the NCAA.”

Williams added that Marquette is conducting a joint review with the NCAA.

This latest piece of news comes during an offseason where Marquette has already handed sophomore Todd Mayo an indefinite suspension, and seen junior college transfer T.J. Taylor withdraw from the school after spending just two weeks on campus.

Marquette was 27-8 in 2011-12 and went 14-4 in the Big East. The Golden Eagles advanced to the Sweet 16 for the second straight season before falling to Florida. MU has been to the NCAA Tournament in seven straight seasons.
