5-Star Providence Recruit Ricky Ledo Still Awaiting Word On Eligibility

With less than three weeks to go before the start of the fall semester, Ricky Ledo still has no idea whether or not he’s going to be taking classes at Providence College.

Ledo, one of the crown jewels of Friars coach Ed Cooley’s elite recruiting class of 2012, is still awaiting word from the NCAA on his eligibility for the upcoming season. The issue, it would seem, is a transcript which includes four different high schools over a five-year period.

“I’m still hoping,” Cooley told the Providence Journal. “I don’t know if it’s hoping against hope but I have zero feel for it. We’ll see.”

That tone from Cooley is decisively less optimistic than it was when he was asked about Ledo’s situation back in June.

“I still feel good about where we’re at with Ricky,” Cooley said at that time. “He still has to finish up a couple of things because of the fact that he was at a few different schools. But I think we should be all right.”

The instability surrounding Ledo, who was rated as the class of 2012’s sixth-best player by Rivals.com, is the latest piece of bad news in a summer that has been chock full of it for Cooley’s top-10 recruiting class.

In June, Kris Dunn, the top-rated point guard in the 2012 class, underwent shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum. While it appears unlikely that he will be redshirted, Dunn figures to be sidelined for at least the first month of the season.

Classmate Ian Baker wishes he was so lucky. The fellow freshman point guard tore his ACL this summer and will not be suiting up for the Friars this season.

All told, there are major issues surrounding three-fourths of the recruiting class that was supposed to lift Providence basketball back into the national conversation. Suffice it to say, some good news on Ledo -- preferably before the beginning of the school year -- would be embraced with open arms and wide smiles.
