Marquette fired assistant coach Scott Monarch and suspended head coach Buzz Williams for the team’s first Big East game following an investigation over a recruit receiving improper benefits.

Monarch was fired after an investigation conducted by an outside law firm determined he provided misleading information about whether he gave a recruit apparel and transportation. He was given the option to resign or be fired. The investigation concluded that Williams had no knowledge of the violations.

“When I was allowed to review the report earlier this week, I was deeply saddened to learn of an error in judgment of one of my assistants and closest friends,” Williams said in a statement, according to CBS Sports. “I take personal responsibility for what happens in this program and realize we must be role models to both our team and the entire University. Our commitment has always been and will always be to operate this program at the highest level of integrity in the Marquette and Jesuit tradition.”

Monarch committed two secondary violations when he gave a recruit apparel and drove him home. It wasn’t the violations that led to his firing, however; it was the fact he lied about it during the investigation. According to the report from CBS Sports, Monarch would “almost certainly” have kept his job if he had been honest.
