Mike Davis Hired As Interim Coach At Texas Southern

Former Indiana and UAB head coach Mike Davis has agreed to terms to become the interim coach at Texas Southern.

Davis replaces Tony Harvey, who resigned for personal reasons July 3. TSU athletic director Charles McClelland said the process called for an interim coach because of the timing of Harvey’s resignation, but that the school will definitely try to retain Davis for the long term.

Over 12 seasons as a head coach, Davis has accumulated a total record 237-152. He is probably still best known for being Bobby Knight’s replacement at Indiana, where he led the Hoosiers to the 2002 national championship game in just his second season on the job. He announced in February of 2006 that he would be resigning at the end of the season, and did so after IU was eliminated in the second round of the NCAA Tournament by Gonzaga.

In six seasons at UAB, Davis compiled a 122-72 record, but took the Blazers to the NCAA Tournament just once. They were the Conference USA regular season champions in 2010-11 and appeared in the big dance as a “First Four” participant, but could not build off of that success last season when they finished 15-16.

Davis inherits a Texas Southern team that went 12-6 in the SWAC last season and made it all the way to the conference tournament championship game before losing to Mississippi Valley State by two points.
