Shabazz Napier Out ‘Several Weeks’ With Stress Fracture

Napier has surgery on foot but is expected to recover fully in time for the start of practice.

Presswire

The University of Connecticut announced that junior point guard Shabazz Napier had surgery performed to heal a stress fracture in his right foot on Friday. Napier will be out for "several weeks" and initially wear a walking boot, but is expected to heal fully and return in time for the start of practice.

The school said that the procedure was officially a "right fifth metatarsal internal fixation" and that it involved a screw being inserted into Napier's foot to speed up the fracture's healing process.

The injury had nagged Napier for a couple of months and caused him to pull out of the Puerto Rican National Team. When it didn’t seem like rest and other treatments would heal the fracture fast enough, Napier and the UConn medical staff opted for surgery.

After winning a national title in 2011, the Huskies were bounced from the 2012 NCAA Tournament in the first round by Iowa State. Napier was UConn’s second-leading scorer in the 2011-12 season with 13 points per game as well as leading the team with 5.8 assists per game.
