Maryland Freshman Sam Cassell Jr. Likely Ineligible

Maryland’s Sam Cassell, Jr. will likely be ruled ineligible for the Terps upcoming 2012 basketball season.

Presswire

Maryland freshman guard Sam Cassell, Jr. will likely be ruled ineligible for the Terps upcoming 2012 basketball season, according to reports. Cassell was expected to contribute right away for Mark Turgeon’s young team, but InsideMDSports.com is reporting that he is unlikely to play for the Terps this season, and possibly beyond. It’s unclear what the specific eligibility hurdle is, but it appears to be academic. Jeff Ermann of InsideMDSports indicated that Cassell is considering a potential transfer to a school that allows partial qualifiers to enroll and begin playing in their second season. If he remains committed to Maryland, he may need to go to junior college for two years before playing for the Terps.

Cassell was part of a heralded recruiting class as Turgeon tries to put his stamp on the program. He originally committed to the Terps before re-opening his recruitment and considering schools such as UConn and Florida State -- his father’s alma mater. His dad currently coaches down the road from Maryland and is on staff with the Wizards.
