Tami Hansbrough, Matt Kupec Resign From UNC Fundraising Positions

Tami Hansbrough, a UNC fundraiser and mother of former Tar Heel Tyler Hansbrough, and Matt Kupec, UNC’s vice chancellor for university advancement, resigned on Wednesday amid allegations they took personal trips on the school’s dime.

Tami Hansbrough, the mother of former North Carolina Tar Heels All-American forward Tyler Hansbrough, resigned her position as a fundraiser at the university on Wednesday afternoon amid a school investigation into trips she took with Matt Kupec, UNC's vice chancellor for university advancement and a former Tar Heel quarterback.

Hansbrough had been taking trips to see her son Tyler play while he was at North Carolina, but those trips were considered permissible, since North Carolina fans and potential donors would be in attendance at those away games. Her trips with Kupec to see her other son, Ben Hansbrough, play basketball for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish were more problematic.

North Carolina Chancellor Holden Thorp discovered that Kupec was charging the personal trips he was taking with Tami Hansbrough to the school. Kupec offered his resignation once Thorp told him of his findings on Sunday night:

“... I told Matt what I had been finding and I was going to have to do a thorough investigation of his travel, and he offered his resignation,” Thorp said, adding he accepted it.

“It was difficult because Matt has been such a great person for the university and has raised billions of dollars for us,” Thorp added, “but I had to share with him what we had been finding and it didn’t look good and that it’s likely that this sort of personally driven travel was unacceptable, and we are going to need to do a pretty thorough investigation of it.”

Prior to resigning on Wednesday, Hansbrough had been placed on administrative.
