It's hard not to feel for green Bruins quarterback Richard Brehaut. With scant starting experience under his belt, he's filling in for the perpetually injured Kevin Prince in the Pac-10's most hostile stadium; he gets a nice little drive going to open play -- and then he gets picked off on a long pass at the Oregon 10. With 11:10 remaining, the Ducks quickly set their trademark boiling pace, reeling off 8 plays that eat 90 yards, and take 1:45 to advance LaMichael James past the opposite goal line.
Bruins Can’t Get Out Of Own Way Early, Trail Ducks 0-15
UCLA converts on second down next drive, thanks to a timely facemask penalty, but is forced to punt shortly thereafter, and the Ducks war machine zips back to work. LaMichael James is hit around the Bruins’ 2-yard line at the end of another rapid-fire drive and has to be helped off the field. Remene Alston gets the 1-yard TD in his stead, and QB Nate Costa the 2-point conversion.
It seems like a slow start for the Ducks, but they’re still on pace to score 60, so that’s nice. (They’ve also passed their school’s single-season scoring record, in their seventh game of 2010.) At the end of the first quarter, Oregon leads, 15-0.
