Boise State head coach Chris Petersen is fond of maintaining that the third-ranked Broncos don't play for style points. And while Tuesday night's 49-20 outing against Louisiana Tech wasn't one of his team's finer efforts, the boys on blue did play with one essential component: balance.
The WAC is known (infamous, even) in college football for its pass-happy, defense-free gameplanning, but Boise State gained 153 of its net 463 yards on the ground. The Broncos also made several key defensive stops, including a fourth-down sack on Ross Jenkins in the second quarter, and forced the Bulldogs to turn the ball over on downs in three separate possessions, all inside their own 10-yard line.
Again, it wasn't their best win, but the Broncos' Week 9 efforts should provide some pushback to naysaying BCS voters insisting that Boise State is a balsa-wood glider of a football team with no fallback plan.
(And speaking of balance, take a look at the variety of actions on Kellen Moore's stat sheet. The kid passed for two touchdowns, caught a scoring pass from one of his own receivers, and even punted. All that was missing was an impromptu sideline proposal.)
