Week 9 is being characterized on ESPN and elsewhere as “Roadblock Saturday,” and while that’s a stupid name, the concept is not entirely without merit. Many of Week 8’s teams currently ranked in the BCS standings are facing trap games, unusually strong opponents, or just plain no-win situations.
BCS No. 5 Michigan State is traveling to meet a No. 18 Iowa team that’s only fallen to the middle of the pack by virtue of two losses that came by a combined eight points. No. 4 TCU plays 1-6 UNLV, but has looked shaky at times this year against overmatched opponents. No. 3 Boise State didn’t beat Louisiana Tech by as gulfy a margin as they could have Tuesday night. No. 2 Oregon is on the road against a hungry, nothing-to-lose USC outfit. And No. 1 Auburn must face Houston Nutt in Oxford.
So let’s put it to a vote: Who will surmount the BCS standings and top the list after another week of college football carnage?
