As we enter Week 9 of the season, several teams atop and below the college football rankings’ top 25 stand to gain glory or lose everything, sometimes through no real fault of their own. The programs with the highest move-and-shakability factors are as follows:
Most To Lose: Auburn’s ahead of TCU in the AP Top 25 by a mere 22 points, and only received one more first-place vote than the Horned Frogs. Houston Nutt is good at one thing in college football, and that’s providing handy trap games for one clearly superior opponent per season.
Alabama could find themselves slipping a little in Week 9 as well. The Crimson Tide have a bye week, but are a one-loss team ahead of two undefeateds, Missouri and Utah. Big wins for the Tigers and Utes could spell a tumble for ‘Bama. Most To Gain: The teams in our Next 5, by and large. Mid-major programs like Nevada could re-enter the college football rankings with a big win over a weak opponent (the ‘Pack plays Utah State this Saturday), while Hawaii and East Carolina wait in the wings for a chance at a Top 25 debut. Hawaii has the easier path, against Idaho in late-night WACtion, but East Carolina must face and defeat a bizarrely competent UCF team to remain in the conversation.
