Boise State’s epic Friday-night loss to Nevada did more than open up the BCS top five to teams like Stanford, Wisconsin, and Oklahoma State. It solidified Auburn and Oregon as the clear frontrunners for a January meeting in Glendale with a certain crystal football trophy on display.
Thanks to AQ bias and schedule strength, it’s safe to say at this point the Broncos were never a dire threat to crack the title game glass ceiling. No, the team who’s really breathing easy this morning is TCU, who have a low-profile matchup against New Mexico this afternoon to close out their regular season and on whom Boise State had been steadily gaining in the BCS standings. The Horned Frogs are now in prime position to be selected for one of the coveted early-January slots.
If the afternoon’s remaining contests shake out as predicted, the other four major BCS bowl projections might look something like this: Rose Bowl: TCU vs. Wisconsin
Fiesta Bowl: Oklahoma State vs. West Virginia
Orange Bowl: Virginia Tech vs. Stanford
Sugar Bowl: LSU vs. Ohio State (grudge rematch alert!)
