Stop me if this is starting to sound familiar: Michigan's lost a starting cornerback for the season. Redshirt sophomore J.T. Floyd will require ankle surgery after being injured in Tuesday's practice, and will not be sufficiently rehabbed in time to finish out the year with the Wolverines. The two deep at corner back is now one senior who has never played the same position in consecutive years and was thrust into the starting lineup after the last devastating injury, and three true freshmen who have been on campus for all of three months. In a perfect world James Rogers would only see the field at the end of a blowout win or two this year and the three freshmen would all be red-shirting. In an OK situation James Rogers and one of the freshmen might be called on to back up a more experienced starter and maybe play a little dime defense. In the hell that is Michigan's defensive backfield, all four of them are thrown into the fire for the final four Big Ten games, as quite possibly the one unit with the most control over Rich Rodriguez's job situation next year.
For all the knocks on Rich Rodriguez's inability to construct and maintain any consistent semblance of a defense (and those are both myriad and justified), this makes the fifth name crossed off the secondary roster that we can name, without even thinking too hard about it, this season. (To say nothing of, say, l'affaire Cissoko in '09.) Maize N Brew suggests the coaching staff try to dredge up Donovan Warren, but moving the practice field so the corners aren't lining up over a haunted ancient battlefield might be a good start.
