Today promised to prove something about college football’s BCS busters. It did: TCU and Boise State are still far and away the best two teams not in BCS conferences.
BCS Rankings Will Be Shaken Up By Alabama’s Loss, Not TCU’s Win
The Horned Frogs dusted Utah, winning 47-7 and not allowing the Utes to cross midfield until the second half. Boise State crushed Hawaii on the Smurf Turf at home, scoring the first 42 points of its 42-7 blowout win. Neither team should move from their spots in the BCS rankings this week — TCU is third, Boise State fourth — but TCU’s lead on the Broncos should grow even larger after a big win over a ranked team.
The more seismic shift will be the shakeout from LSU’s upset of Alabama.
The Tigers are now the SEC’s best one-loss team, but their BCS National Championship Game hopes rely on winning the SEC Championship Game. LSU can’t get to Atlanta without at least one Auburn loss, though, and so the Bayou Bengals faithful should be huge Georgia and Alabama fans in coming weeks.
And for Alabama, a second loss this season shatters any hopes of a repeat national championship, and likely kneecaps the Crimson Tide when it comes to a BCS bowl berth. Hey, that’s the dark side of Les Miles’ insanity: someone on the other side loses.
