2010 Poinsettia Bowl Game: Time, Location, History And More

To help prime you for the third of four consecutive game days this week, we’ve compiled this handy list of fun factoids concerning the 2010 Poinsettia Bowl.

Proper name: San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl, a perennial contender for Nation’s Most Unwieldy Game To Pronounce On-Air.
Setting: Qualcomm Stadium, San Diego, California. Home of the San Diego Chargers, and currently very much under water.
Traditional conference pairing: Mountain West versus various service academies and WAC teams.

2010 matchup: Navy Midshipmen (9-3) vs. San Diego State Aztecs (8-4)

Announcers:
With a quality game does not necessarily come quality announcers: Mike Patrick and Craig James will natter on in the booth, with Holly Rowe on the sidelines as the crew's only bright spot.

Neatest fact: The San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl is the only currently-operating college football bowl game named after a toxic houseplant.

Closest finish: The 2008 clash between TCU and Boise State, a precursor to their 2009 Fiesta Bowl meeting, saw the Horned Frogs edge the Broncos by one point, 17-16.
Most lopsided finish: The second Poinsettia Bowl, in December 2006, featured the Horned Frogs in their first postseason appearance in San Diego, walloping Northern Illinois 37-7.

Tidbits of interest: This will be the first game since the bowl's inaugural 2005 contest to not feature either TCU or Utah out of the Mountain West. San Diego State linebacker Demetrius Barksdale never appeared on The Wire. Also, the flood thing.

The 2010 San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl kicks off at 8 p.m. EST, Thursday, December 23. The game will be televised on ESPN. For a complete list of bowls, browse our 2010 college football postseason schedule.
