Poinsettia Bowl Odds, Picks For Navy Vs. San Diego State

The 2010 college football postseason rattles on toward Glendale this week, and it's time to place all your money set aside for Christmas shopping on ridiculous, half-assed bowl games played by largely inept football teams. Degenerate gamblers, start your engines. Now playing: Navy and San Diego State in the Poinsettia Bowl.

The line: Vegas favors the Aztecs by more than a field goal but less than a touchdown, with the margin fluctuating between 3 and 5.5.

Notable Navy units: The Midshipmen, rocking the triple option, boast the nation's fifth-ranked rushing offense and 118th-ranked passing offense. When quarterback Ricky Dobbs does throw the ball, however, he's effective with it and well-protected: The Mids rank 11th in pass efficiency and ninth in sacks allowed.

Notable San Diego State units: Very much the opposite on offense. The Aztecs wield the country's 11th-ranked passing offense, with a rushing offense clocking in at 63rd. They're aces in tackles for loss (fifth nationally), but woeful in turnover margin (101st).

The pick: I had Navy picked to go undefeated this season thanks to returning starters and a favorable schedule, but San Diego State has quietly put together an impressive season in a strong Mountain West. Call this one a toss-up, with maybe the slightest of edges to Navy for more quality wins.

The 2010 San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl kicks off at 8 p.m. EST. The game will be televised on ESPN.
