To help prime you for Wednesday’s college football tripleheader, we’ve compiled this handy list of fun factoids concerning the 2010 Texas Bowl.
2010 Texas Bowl Game: Time, Location, History And More
Proper name: The Texas Bowl! We (and the broadcast crews) do love us those short bowl names.
Setting: Reliant Stadium in Houston, home of the NFL’s Texans and assorted rodeos. Rawhide!
Traditional conference pairing: Big 12 versus Big Ten
2010 matchup: The 7-5 Baylor Bears against the 6-6 Illinois Fighting Illini
Announcers: A largely pleasant mixed bag (apart from Griese The Elder), with Dave Pasch, Bob Griese, Holly Rowe, and the rare treat of Chris Spielman.
Neatest fact: Ever take a good look at the Texas Bowl logo? It happens to be the only college football postseason contest icon shaped like a belt buckle, which is itself shaped like a football with the state of Texas engraved on it. Did I just blow your mind? I did, right?
Closest finish: The bowl’s only been running for four years, so the closest thing to a tight game was still a touchdown victory (TCU’s 20-13 win over Houston in 2007).
Most lopsided finish: The inaugural Texas Bowl saw Rutgers whack Kansas State, 37-10.
Tidbits of interest: For the first three years of the game’s existence, it was televised on the NFL Network, which was a really dumb idea. Fans in attendance this afternoon will be subjected to something called the Bud Light TexFest, which is so upscale it’s being held in one of the satellite parking lots. And the very first MVP of the Texas Bowl was a kid from Rutgers named Ray Rice, whose current work in Baltimore you may be familiar with.
The 2010 Texas Bowl kicks off at 6 p.m. EST, Wednesday, December 29. The game will be televised on ESPN. For a complete list of bowls, browse our 2010 college football postseason schedule.
