Round one of the battle between the Texas Bowl’s two dual-threat quarterbacks is sort of a draw despite Baylor Bears QB Robert Griffin III completing all of his passes for 21 aerial yards and running for another 19. After reaching the Illinois Fighting Illini red zone, Griffin III attempted a screen pass that wound up being a backwards pass. When an Illini defender socked the Bears receiver, the loose ball officially became a fumble.
Texas Bowl, Baylor Vs. Illinois: Robert Griffin Turnover Leads To Illini Field Goal
Illinois defender Travon Bellamy returned the ball 47 yards to Baylor’s 28. The Illini offense couldn’t do much with it, with its only significant gain an eight-yard run by QB Nathan Scheelhaase. Kicker Derek Dimke booted the 38-yarder to put the Illini on the board first.
Baylor punted away its second drive, but is getting pressure on Scheelhaase in the pocket. Baylor doesn’t get very many sacks, but I tried to warn you about Illinois’ pass blocking.
