Illinois Fighting Illini QB Nathan Scheelhaase is winning the Texas Bowl battle against Baylor Bears QB Robert Griffin III, though he’s getting considerably more help from the rest of his offense. While Baylor receivers are dropping passes and Bears running backs have managed just three yards, Illini RB Mikel Leshoure’s 71 yards and powerful touchdown run have set things up nicely for Scheelhaase.
Texas Bowl, Baylor Vs. Illinois: Mikel Leshoure TD After Nathan Scheelhaase Bomb, Illini Up 16-0
The Illini QB has certainly taken advantage, too. Eight-of-eight passing for 140 yards, including a 52-yard bomb to Ryan Lankford that set up Leshoure’s touchdown run, Scheelhaase has also avoided turnovers while Griffin threw a costly interfumble thing early on.
Illinois kicker Derek Dimke has kicked three medium-range field goals, hence the score, as the Illini have repeatedly gotten within scoring range but failed to punch it in before Leshoure’s touchdown run.
Baylor got the ball back, and has already punted after two Griffin overthrows.
