The Illinois Fight Illini continue to pour it on in their Texas Bowl match-up with the Baylor Bears. Illinois opens the quarter on its own 13-yard line and breezes down the field in nine plays.
Texas Bowl, Baylor Vs. Illinois: Teams Trade Scores to Open Half, Illinois Leads 24-7
Running back Mikel Leshoure carries the ball four times for 32 yards, Jason Ford adds 16 yards, most of it on a 15-yard carry. Just for good measure, Leshoure dives in on the 13-yard score. He tacks on a two-point conversion, giving Illinois a nice, even 24-point lead.
Baylor’s next drive includes — what else? — an overthrow by Robert Griffin III, but the offense seems to be getting back on track. Griffith goes 5-of-7 for 47 yards and runs for another 17, Jay Finley tacks on 9 yards rushing, including the TD to cap off the drive, and the Bears have their first points of the game.
But the rules of the game require that Baylor give the ball back to Illinois. A defensive stop would be nice; the Illini have scored on five of their first seven drives.
