Auburn and Oregon seem poised on an immutable collision course for Glendale, and while no one’s arguing there’s any real chance the BCS title game will contain any combatants but these two, this is 2010. Virginia Tech lost to James Madison at home. Texas isn’t bowl-eligible. Mike Locksley will have a job next year. Anything is possible, especially now.
A loss by both top-ranked teams would certainly make TCU a logical choice, but would voters see it that way? Auburn’s beaten four ranked opponents and is about to face a fifth. Oregon’s beaten three. TCU has bested two. (But one of them was Oregon State in Week 1, so if the Ducks are knocked off in Corvallis, does that compound the Horned Frogs’ advantage?)
Much has been made in past years of the formidability of certain one-loss SEC champions and their relative worthiness or unworthiness of a bid to the BCS title game. On the opposite coast, the Pac-10 has displayed magnificent wealths of talent this season. But winning is winning, and that’s all TCU’s been doing. If the unthinkable becomes inescapable and both the Ducks and Tigers fall this weekend, who would you send to Arizona?
