Sun Bowl, Miami Vs. Notre Dame: ‘Canes Getting Flattened Early, 27-3

The second quarter of the 2010 Sun Bowl, you'll be shocked to hear, is going even more badly for Miami than did the first. Three plays into the quarter, Jacory Harris throws his second pick of the afternoon to Harrison Smith, who returns it for 16 yards. A 15-yard Miami penalty moves the Irish to the Hurricanes' 34-yard line, and on the first ensuing play from scrimmage, Cierre Wood breaks free through the right side of the line for a 34-yard touchdown run. Notre Dame 21, Miami 0.

On the 'Canes' second play from scrimmage in the following possession, Smith picks off Harris again, this time for no gain, and the Irish bestow a merciful three-and-out. Freshman quarterback Stephen Morris, already nursing a sprained ankle, is inserted in place of a horrifyingly beleagured Harris, and does convert Miami's first set of downs. He blows by the second set with a 24-yard pass to LaRon Byrd ... and is then himself intercepted by Smith. The Irish convert this boon into a 40-yard David Ruffer field goal. Notre Dame 24, Miami 0.

The 'Canes burn two and a half minutes off the clock, are not intercepted, and give the ball back without incident. The Irish kick a 50-yard field goal. Notre Dame 27, Miami 0.

A 31-yard kickoff return by Travis Benjamin puts the 'Canes in favorable field position to start what will be the last drive of the half. This is about where we see Notre Dame QB Tommy Rees, himself a freshman backup for most of the season, being escorted to the locker room to check on an undisclosed injury. Two passes from Morris of 24 and 15 yards set up Miami to get on the board at last, and Matt Bosher boots through a 47-yarder as time expires. At the half, the score is Notre Dame 27, Miami 3.
