Still unconvinced that Cam Newton should be the 2010 Heisman Trophy winner? What if I told you that what he has done today eclipses everything he has done to this point?
In SEC Championship Game, Cam Newton Joins Tim Tebow’s 20-20 Club, Threatens 50-Touchdown Plateau
Newton’s day on its own has been remarkable: he’s passed for a career-high 335 yards and tied a career-high with four touchdown passes, and set a new career mark for touchdowns accounted for in a game with six combined passing and rushing scores. And, oh, yeah, he helped Auburn score a SEC Championship Game-record 56 points.
But Newton also added a laurel to his sparkling season, and put himself in position to make more history.
With a third quarter touchdown run, he joined Tim Tebow as one of four FBS players to have 20 passing and 20 rushing touchdowns in a single season (Nevada's Colin Kaepernick reached the 20-20 plateau for this season during a 35-17 win over Louisiana Tech; Central Michigan's Dan LeFevour has a club of his own, passing for 20 touchdowns and scoring 20 as a runner and a receiver in one season), and with a fourth quarter touchdown pass, Newton accounted for his 49th touchdown of the season. He's thrown for 28 scores, run for another 20 touchdowns, and caught one pass for a score, and put himself well within range of throwing for 30 touchdowns and run for 20 in a season, and accounting for 50 touchdowns. The only other guy to do that? Again, Tim Tebow. And, unlike Tebow in 2007, Newton doesn't have anything resembling Percy Harvin at Auburn, and has piloted his team to an undefeated record and a likely BCS National Championship Game berth.
So, yes, Cam Newton is quite good at football.
