Liberty Bowl Gets Central Florida; Conference USA Champs Await Opponent

With its 17-7 win over SMU in the Conference USA championship game, Central Florida earned and accepted a bid to the Liberty Bowl, which will take place in Memphis on New Year’s Eve. And though most college football bowl projections have the Knights facing Georgia, they won’t likely know for sure until the BCS Bowl Selection show airs on ESPN on Sunday at 9 p.m.

The trip to the Liberty Bowl will be the fourth bowl game in six seasons for UCF, and it will be a return trip to Memphis; the Knights lost to Mississippi State in 2007. Last season in the St. Pete Bowl, Central Florida lost to Rutgers, 45-24. The Knights have yet to win a bowl game.

UCF Athletics Director Keith Tribble told the school athletics website after the game that the Knights will be on a mission in Memphis.

“When I saw the kids working out in spring ball and in the summer they had their minds set on wanting to represent this conference as champions. They wanted to get to this (C-USA title) game and win it and they did it. Very few times in life do you get a chance to follow out our dreams and goals and they did it. Now, they want to go to the Liberty Bowl, play a good opponent from the SEC and win the game, and we think we can do it.”

SMU, meanwhile, accepted a bid to play in the Armed Forces Bowl, in which the Mustangs will face Army. That game will take place Dec. 30 at Gerald J. Ford Stadium ... also known as SMU’s home field.
