Texas Bowl Grabs Illinois, Baylor

The Texas Bowl is one of the bowl season’s more nondescript tilts: it takes place at Reliant Stadium, the Houston Texans’ home field, on December 29, at 6 p.m. Eastern. It’s fitting that this year’s edition of the bowl game pits two of this year’s more nondescript teams.

That would be Illinois and Baylor, two squads that have accepted bids to the Texas Bowl and have no more than one player most of the country has heard of. For the Illini, that’s Mikel Leshoure, who is eighth in the country in rushing yards, with 1,513 yards on the ground this season. The Bears will counter with Robert Griffin III, the electric quarterback with track star speed and an improving grasp of the finer points of a passing offense.

Neither team as a whole had a great season — though Baylor, in its first bowl since the Clinton Administration, and Illinois, still lamentably coached by Ron Zook, will take what they can get — making this Texas Bowl one of the less anticipated tilts of this year’s bowl schedule. But, if you’re betting, bank on Baylor, which only has to make the trip from Waco to Houston.
