Urban Meyer resigning from Florida produces a lot of questions without a lot of answers — Why is Meyer stepping down? Who is next in Gainesville? — but there’s probably one question that can be answered: is Meyer the best college football coach of the BCS era?
Urban Meyer Stepping Down From Florida As Arguably The Greatest BCS-Era Coach
Time for a comparison!
Meyer: 103-23 career record, 64-15 at Florida, two BCS National Championships, two SEC Championships, four BCS bowl wins.
Nick Saban: 133-53-1 career record, 42-11 at Alabama, 48-16 at LSU, two BCS National Championships (only head coach with BCS National Championships at different schools), three SEC championships, three BCS bowl wins.
Mack Brown: 219-108-1, 133-35 at Texas, one BCS National Championship, two Big 12 championships, three BCS bowl wins.
Pete Carroll: 97-19 (er, or 83-19) at USC, one BCS National Championship, two AP national championships, seven Pac-10 championships, six BCS bowl wins.
Jim Tressel: 240-79-2, 105-22 at Ohio State, one BCS National Championship, seven Big Ten championships, four BCS bowl wins.
For me, it comes down to Meyer or Saban, and whether one values Meyer’s successes at Bowling Green and Utah, then at Florida — both with Ron Zook’s players and his own — over Saban building two national champions.
The deciding factor, for some? Saban is 2-1 against Meyer.
