Mark Dantonio was hospitalized after a heart attack suffered just after his Michigan State team beat Notre Dame ten days ago. Dantonio isn’t one to lay up forever, though: he will resume his coaching duties from the press box against Wisconsin on Saturday.
Michigan State’s Mark Dantonio Will Coach From Press Box Against Wisconsin
↵The cynic would charge that it was relatively easy for Dantonio to miss Michigan State’s game against Northern Colorado, a 45-7 win, while it would be a bit harder for him to skip the Spartans’ date against one of the Big Ten’s top teams. The cynic would be worried that Dantonio is putting his team before his health.
↵The realist understands that this is just how football coaches are. Dantonio has a heart attack and comes right back. Urban Meyer retires, unretires, has chest pains, gets a diagnosis, takes a tsunami-interrupted vacation, and comes back. Joe Paterno breaks his leg and comes back. Football coaching, at its highest levels, is a vocation for the obsessive and the dedicated, one that takes up the first 14 spots on a to-do list. In that respect, Dantonio’s just another coach. Can I breathe? Great. Now let’s beat the Badgers.
