Senior Bowl 2011: South Rolling North, Up 17-0 At Halftime

The 2011 Senior Bowl is supposed to be a showcase for all the nation’s best senior NFL Draft prospects. The North is waiting for that showcase part.

Through 30 minutes in Mobile, it’s been all South: the red-clad team is up 17-0 through two quarters, and it hasn’t really been close.

The South team has 213 total yards and 12 first downs; the North has 18 total yards and one first down. (Bilal Powell of Louisville, not even the South’s leading rusher, has 18 yards on the ground.) Though Jake Locker was mercifully returned to the bench — players rotate in the glorified exhibition — after a miserable first quarter, neither Ricky Stanzi nor Colin Kaepernick managed to move the North very well, and although Kaepernick fired a 23-yard strike, he followed that up with an interception.

The North, of course, is playing very well. Christian Ponder passed for 94 yards and a touchdown in the first half, and Derrick Locke had five carries for 34 yards. Noel Devine has the South’s other touchdown, but only eight yards on seven carries.

On the bright side for the South? Uh ... they’re averaging 22 yards per kick return?
