Ah, the comforting hum of the fax machine. Oregon’s football recruiting has the school positioned for a pleasant National Signing Day, which should be a nice way to recover from a crushing last-minute loss to Auburn in the BCS Championship Game. This is especially true since the bumper crop of talent the coaching staff is poised to bring in will make another shot at the title more likely than it has been in Duck history.

The Ducks have 23 recruits on the docket for 2011. Unlike recent efforts, this Oregon class is not a collection of hard-working overacheivers from the three-star bin. The Ducks have already landed Athlete Colt Lyerla, a five-star commit who could play linebacker or tight end, though his lean toward offense is one of the factors that pushed him toward Oregon in the first place. (The article jokes about coaches fighting over Lyerla, but seriously, there will be a bloodied lip in the coaches’ room in Eugene over him.)
The Ducks also may have snagged another five star recruit from USC over the weekend. Cornerback and Trojan commit De’Anthony “Black Mamba” Thomas of Crenshaw High. It’s all a lovely recruiting rumor at this point, but Thomas did visit Eugene on the final weekend of the handshake season, and did reportedly enjoy his visit. like Lyerla, he can play either way (cornerback/running back).
The other four-star highlights from Oregon’s class:
OL Tyler Johnstone OL, Chandler, AZ.
WR Devin Blackmon , Fontana, CA. He is apparently so good with the ball in his hands that he could play QB. Given Oregon’s recent QB injury curse, this could totally happen.
DB Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, Chino Hills, CA. Listed as a DB, but could end up on offense.
OL Andre Yruretagoyena, Scottsdale, AZ.
WR Tacoi Sumier, Miami, FL.
LB Anthony Wallace, Dallas, TX.
ATH Christian French, Cedar Rapids, IA. The rare four star double-adjective signee.
WR Rahsaan Vaughn, San Mateo, CA.
QB Jerrard Randall, Hollywood, CA.
Remaining drama: Very little for the Ducks in an orderly and wholly successful (to this date) signing class. They may be going to the wire for the Black Mamba, and if Lane Kiffin is involved theatrics are always a possibility, but otherwise this should be a pleasing harvest for Kelly and his staff.
