Jeron Gouveia-Winslow Injury: Hokies Starter Shelved For Season

The Hokies will be missing starting linebacker Jeron Gouveia-Winslow for the rest of the year after he was diagnosed with a foot sprain that will require surgery.

Virginia Tech's vaunted defense will be missing a key piece for the rest of the season after the team announced that starting linebacker Jeron Gouveia-Winslow will miss the remainder of the season with a foot injury that will require surgery.

Out with what's called a Lisfranc strain, Gouveia-Winslow will be replaced in the starting lineup by redshirt junior Alonzo Tweedy, who will make his first career start against Wake Forest Saturday. While not a star by any means, Gouveia-Winslow is a solid contributor whose unspectacular numbers (nine tackles, 0.5 sacks, and an interception) have been partly facilitated by Tech's opponents running a spread, keeping him off the field while the Hokies line up in nickel and dime packages.

Tweedy was phenomenal filling in for Gouveia-Winslow in the Hokies’ narrow win over Miami Saturday, recording eight tackles and a pick in less than a full game. If Hokies fans are lucky, there won’t be much of a drop-off in production.
