South Carolina head ball coach Steve Spurrier is putting an end to the Stephen Garcia era ... for now. He announced that sophomore Connor Shaw would start for the No. 18 Gamecocks this Saturday against Kentucky.
Connor Shaw Replaces Stephen Garcia At Quarterback for South Carolina
Steve Spurrier is replacing Stephen Garcia at quarterback with Connor Shaw after the Gamecocks week 5 loss to Auburn.
The tipping point appears to be last week’s 16-13 loss to Auburn, in which Garcia went completed nine of his 23 passes for just 160 yards and two picks. The Tigers’ defense entered the contest with the worst pass defense in the SEC.
Here is more details from practice via The State’s Josh Kendall:
But as inconsistent as Garcia has been, Shaw is no sure thing. He started the season opener against East Carolina but was benched in favor of Garcia, who led the Gamecocks to a come-from-behind win. If Shaw struggles again, will Spurrier be able to resist turning the offense back over to his fifth-year senior?
One last note on the benching, Kendall added that Garcia took the news OK. According to Steve Spurrier, “He sort of anticipated it.”
