The Florida A&M band has been suspended following the death of a band member last weekend. University President James Ammons announced at a press conference on Tuesday that the famous Marching 100 will not practice or perform while an investigation is conducted to determine what led to the death.
Florida A&M’s Marching 100 Band Suspended In Wake Of Member’s Death
The Marching 100, Florida A&M University’s band, has been suspended following the death of one its members.
Drum major Robert Champion, 26, was found unresponsive on a bus parked in front of a hotel on Saturday night after a football games against Bethune-Cookman. Before he collapsed, Champion was “vomiting and saying he couldn’t breathe,” according to the Associated Press report.
Florida A&M has had problems with hazing in the past. Ammons announced on Tuesday that the school has formed an independent task force, which will investigate whether the incident is a result of an ongoing and inappropriate tradition of hazing. Ammons added Florida A&M will cooperate with police who are investigating the death as well.
