Turner Gill’s tenure as Kansas’ head coach will reportedly end after just two years at the helm in Lawrence. Matt Tait of the Lawrence Journal-World reported that sources said Gill had been fired as Kansas’ coach after the Jayhawks’ 2-10 season, and Kansas announced the news on its official site Sunday afternoon. Recruiting coordinator Reggie Mitchell will serve as Kansas’ interim head coach.
Turner Gill Fired As Kansas Coach
Turner Gill has been fired as Kansas’ head coach. Reggie Mitchell will take over as the Jayhawks’ interim head coach, and a national coaching search will be conducted to find Gill’s replacement.
Gill is owed $6 million over the remaining three years of his contract. Kansas athletic director Sheahon Zenger announced that Kansas will fulfill the terms of that contract in a statement.
Zenger also confirmed that a national search for Gill’s successor will begin immediately, saying “I have no specific timetable, (but) naturally I would like to have a new coach on board as soon as possible.”
Gill went 20-30 at Buffalo before being hired at Kansas in 2009 after leading the Bulls to their first-ever bowl win. But he struggled mightily in the Big 12, leading Kansas to a 5-19 record in his two seasons with the Jayhawks.
