Neil Callaway Resigns From UAB Football After Three-Win Season

Neil Callaway is no longer the head coach of UAB football.

The UAB Blazers mustered a .305 winning percentage under five-year head coach Neil Callaway, with decreasing win totals in each of the last three seasons. Sunday, UAB announced Callaway has agreed to resign after meeting with athletic director Brian Mackin.

“I met with Coach Callaway earlier today and we mutually agreed that his tenure as our football coach will not be extended,” said Mackin. “I want to thank Neil for his service during his five years as head coach of our football program. There have been many positives attained in his time as head coach, especially the improvement in our APR scores and overall academic success the past several years.

“However, we have not experienced the level of success on the field that we all desire and expect for this program.”

Callaway’s crowning achievement in Birmingham came just a few weeks ago, when his Blazers shattered the BCS hopes of then-ranked Southern Miss. The former Houston, Alabama, and Georgia offensive coordinator was able to win only 18 games in his half-decade at one of FBS’ most forlorn destinations, notching nary a bowl bid.
