Certain Oklahoma State fans and fans of games that involve touchdowns have been passing around a quote in the name of Nick Saban, said to be from 2003, when Saban's LSU Tigers were in danger of missing the championship game. The Oklahoma Sooners were ranked No. 1 before losing the Big 12 championship game the week prior, leaving three one-loss teams (OU, SEC champ LSU, and Pac-10 champ USC) to fight for two title game spots.
Did 2003 Nick Saban Really Insist Only Conference Champs Should Make Title Game?
The supposed quote, which would rule out Alabama playing in this year’s championship if applied as a rule:
Anyone who doesn’t win their conference, has no business playing in the national championship.
DAMNING! Cancel the rematch. Houston should play Boise State in New Orleans. The SEC is a hypocrite! Here come the touchdowns. OVERSIGNING.
“I don’t think anyone will know who the legitimate national champion is unless all three teams in consideration get the opportunity to play one another,” LSU coach Nick Saban said.
Or maybe it’s this one:
“We’re the only two (contending) teams in the country that had to play a 13th game,” he said. “We had to do a little bit more to earn the right.”
Either way, ESPN’s Chris Fowler joins The Oklahoman’s Jenni Carlson in proclaiming no evidence of the quote:
@cbfowler Please, researchers and archivists here find NO credible source citing Saban comment about non conf champs being in BCS title game.
