Oregon’s John Neal A UAB Coaching Candidate, According To Report

Former UAB assistant John Neal, now an assistant at Oregon, is getting a big push as the Blazers’ next head coach from one of his former players.

Oregon secondary coach John Neal is being pushed hard as a candidate to be the UAB Blazers' next football coach by a former UAB player.

Justin Craft, a defensive back who played at UAB under then-secondary coach Neal in 1995 and 1996, has put his vote out there for who should replace Neil Calloway (via AL.com).

“Without question, he is the best coach that I’ve ever played for and that’s saying a lot,” Craft said. “He knows the game of football inside and out and I think you can look at where Oregon was defensively and what they’ve been able to do since he got there. He was a part of the old Steel Shield at UAB when we were really known for playing good defensive football.”

According to some sources, Neal is interested in talking to UAB. He was formerly the secondary coach for eight seasons, beginning in 1995, and was the defensive coordinator during his final two years. He was also UAB’s recruiting coordinator for six seasons and coached the program’s special teams.

The school also has it's sights set on Houston offensive coordinator Jason Phillips, former Illinois offensive coordinator Paul Petrino and Georgia Southern head coach Jeff Monken.
