Defensive coordinator Ted Roof departed the Auburn Tigers on Wednesday after deciding to accept a job as DC with the Central Florida Knights. The search is on for a new Auburn defensive coordinator, with the school taking a look at Mark Stoops of the Florida State Seminoles, according to Charles Goldberg of the Birmingham News.

Stoops, who is the younger brother of Oklahoma Sooners head coach Bob Stoops, and former Arizona Wildcats head coach Mike Stoops, has been with the Seminoles as defensive coordinator since 2009. Before that, he served as DC under his brother Mike for the Arizona from 2004-2009.
Stoops could provide a big and much-needed boost to the Auburn defense, which ranked 78th in total defense in 2011. The Seminoles under Stoops ranked sixth overall.
Despite a down year for Roof’s Auburn defense in 2010, UCF tapped him to improve their defense after parting ways with defensive coordinator John Skladany and his assistant coaches.
