The Golden Bears landed a big commitment over the weekend in receiver Darius Powe. SB Nation’s California Golden Blogs has the scoop:
Cal Football Recruiting Update: Darius Powe Commits, Ishmael Adams Visits
As Bear insiders expected, Cal is closing hard and fast in the weeks leading up to signing day.

At 6’2”, 190 pounds he could develop into a capable, physical receiver that can run many of the big-time routes. You can already see that his technique is pretty sound in the way he uses his entire body to put defenders on their heels. He’s good at adjusting to where the football is throwing the ball and being precise in timing with his quarterback. In time, he has a chance to develop into one of our most solid pass-catchers.Why did Powe choose to commit to Cal when most sources believe he was Oregon State bound going into the weekend visit with the Bears? Powe told ESPN:
“Oregon State was definitely my leader but Cal was such a great fit for me,” Powe said. “I didn’t know I was going to like it as much as I did, but I knew right away it was the best place for me. I actually committed on Saturday and I’m very excited to be a Bear right now.Powe is widely considered one of the top 20 receivers in this class, and Cal definitely needs receivers. Tedford and Co. are closing strong, as I predicted in early November.
Cornerback Ishmael Adams of Oaks Christian (Westlake Village, California) really enjoyed his visit to Cal, per ESPN:
“I had a great visit, and I was very comfortable there,” Adams said. “I knew so many people that were also visiting and it was a lot of fun to hang out with everyone. There was definitely a nice buzz going around and a lot of people were talking about how fun it would be if we all went to Cal together.Adams is thought to be down to just Cal and Arizona State, with Arizona State likely leading for the 5’11” corner.
And Adams’ teammate at Oaks Christian, former USC commitment Jordan Payton also had a good time on his visit, letting Bear fans know via twitter. The receiver is still considering Cal, Michigan and Notre Dame, among others.
Our Cal insider says that Cal feels confident in its position with defensive Tackle Aziz Shittu and offensive/defensive lineman Arik Armstead. Signing those two elite linemen would be an enormous boost to Cal’s already impressive haul.
