2011 Pinstripe Bowl, Iowa State Vs. Rutgers: Scarlet Knights Put On Their Winning Caps, 27-13
Iowa State Vs. Rutgers Recap, Pinstripe Bowl 2011: The Numerical
1: Catches by Brandon Coleman. The Rutgers receiver was targeted five times and caught only one pass ... but it went for 86 yards and the game-clinching touchdown. Timeliness: Brandon Coleman had it.
31: Yards gained in James White’s first two carries. ISU came out running the read-option to perfection; their first three plays: runs of 23 and eight yards by White, and a 10-yard keeper by Barnett. But that was just about all ISU was able to manage on the ground. White’s final seven carries gained just 11 yards, and Barnett rushed just two other times for eight yards before getting banged up and leaving the game. Rutgers was pretty quickly able to make ISU one-dimensional ... and for the Cyclones, it was the wrong dimension.

Greene’s right ankle somehow became trapped in the turf as he lunged towards Jantz. He was in an awkward position in the first place, but his right leg appeared to stick, and the torque of his body did very bad things to his lower leg and foot. Simply, his ankle rolled around the wrong way and appeared to snap in the process.
There is a gif after the jump for the curious. It is gruesome, so be warned. Again: WARNING GRUESOME GIF.

Friday afternoon at Yankee Stadium, Iowa State has opened up a 6-0 over Rutgers after one quarter of the Pinstripe Bowl. Iowa State quarterback Jared Barnett has produced mixed results in the passing game thus far, but Rutgers’ Chas Dodd has established the passing game with 80 yards on seven completions. Getty ImagesNOTE: Confused? See the quick glossary at the bottom.
Last year’s inaugural Pinstripe Bowl featured 877 yards, 70 points, no turnovers, multiple flea-flickers, a fake field goal, and a controversial finish featuring the worst celebration penalty you’ve ever seen. It was the standard bearer for why minor, inconsequential bowl games can be silly and exhilarating. What can it do for an encore? And since Yankee Stadium evidently breathed life into two iffy offenses last year, can it do the same this time around?

(Photo by Reese Strickland/Getty Images) Getty ImagesThe Iowa State Cyclones barely snuck into the 2011 Pinstripe Bowl, going 6-6 against a brutal schedule. But what a 6-6 it was, highlighted by a 37-31 OT win in November to effectively knock the Oklahoma State Cowboys out of the BCS National Championship Game. Their only win by more than a touchdown came on Oct. 29 against a ranked Texas Tech squad. Their other five wins came by a combined 17 points.
The Cyclones rank just 86th and 83rd in FBS division football in average points scored and points allowed, respectively, this season. They are buoyed by the fact that five of their losses came against ranked opponents. Still, Iowa State would prefer actual victories to moral ones, and to win Friday they will need better consistency on both sides of the ball. Lucky for them, Rutgers isn’t the team of world-beaters that the Cyclones are used to seeing.
