For the first time since 1991, Pittsburg State has a national football championship. After falling short three times since, twice by a single score each, the Gorillas have downed Wayne State, 35-21, in the 2011 Division II National Championship Game.
Pitt State Vs. Wayne State Final Score: Division II Title Belongs To Gorillas
The Warriors made a run in the fourth quarter, drawing within six points with seven minutes to go, but Mickey Mohner’s third interception officially ended any hopes of a comeback. Despite being down by two touchdowns with 28 seconds left and without the ball, Wayne State kept calling time outs. That was about the only late drama.
John Brown finished with 99 yards worth of receptions. Zac Dickey threw for 190 yards and ran for 58. The Gorilla D held WSU to 270 total yards and secured five turnovers. If not for Toney Davis’ 178 yards rushing, one could be tricked into thinking Wayne State hadn’t even bothered to take the field on offense. If not for turnovers, this game could’ve come down to the final minute.
Wayne State finishes with its first-ever 10-win season -- a 12-win campaign, in fact.
