The St. Xavier Cougars took on a dynasty in the 2011 NAIA Championship on Saturday, and after building an early lead only to see it evaporate, the Cougars took that dynasty down, too, defeating the Carroll Fighting Saints 24-20 for their first NAIA Championship.
2011 NAIA Championship Final Score: St. Xavier Topples Carroll, 24-20
St. Xavier built 10-0 and 17-7 leads in the first half, but a 64-yard kickoff return to open the second half gave Carroll a 20-17 lead. The Cougars scored to answer that touchdown, though, and held Carroll scoreless for the balance of the game after that.
St. Xavier quarterback Jimmy Coy threw for 216 yards and a touchdown and added 78 yards and another touchdown on the ground.
Carroll’s Chance Demarais, the NAIA Division I leader in rushing yardage, was held to 57 yards and 21 carries. Quarterback Dane Broadhead threw for 223 yards and two touchdowns.
Carroll had won six of the last 10 NAIA Championships, while St. Xavier had never even appeared in the NAIA Championship Game before this year.
