The 2012 Sugar Bowl will be the first-ever meeting between the Michigan Wolverines and Virginia Tech Hokies. It will not, however, be the first time that Michigan offensive coordinator Al Borges has coached against the VT defense in the Sugar Bowl.
Sugar Bowl 2012: Michigan OC Al Borges Familiar With Virginia Tech Defense
In 2005, Borges was in charge of the Auburn Tigers offense when they lined up against Virginia Tech. Despite being held well below their average in scoring, the Tigers won the game 16-13.
Some things have changed about Frank Beamer’s defense since then but some things, as Borges puts it, have not (via AnnArbor.com):
“They’re a sic-‘em type defense,” Borges said last week. “By that, I mean they come after you. They come after you and try to force the issue. Very athletic.
“His defense (remains) very similar. He’s changed some things, but still very similar.”
Borges expects the game to be decided when Virginia Tech’s defense, which ranks 17th against the run, meets up with Michigan’s Denard Robinson and Fitz Toussaint, both of whom are 1,000-yard rushers and part of an offense that averages 235.7 rushing yards per game.
