Ted Roof Reportedly Hired As UCF Defensive Coordinator

Auburn defensive coordinator Ted Roof is hired to lead the UCF defense, according to a report on Wednesday. UCF head coach George O’Leary has been looking to replace a significant portion of his defensive staff, including the coordinator, after a disappointing 2011 campaign.

Roof’s reported agreement with UCF comes from Auburn Undercover, by way of the Orlando Sentinel.

Roof was rumored to be a strong candidate for the Knights' job, but UCF coach George O'Leary has not confirmed the new hire. Roof was O'Leary's defensive coordinator at Georgia Tech from 1999-2001. O'Leary has long favored assistant coaching candidates who are familiar with his coaching and management style, insisting staff chemistry is a key component of the program's success.

Following a strong performance in 2010, when Auburn won the BCS National Championship, the Tigers’ defense slipped this past season. For the year, the defense ranked near the bottom of the NCAA in multiple defensive categories, including scoring defense.

Roof will also reportedly work with the linebackers and secondary, should the move be confirmed by UCF.
