All right, let’s see if we can pin down what happened in Texas coaching circles over the past month or so: Back in mid-January, longtime Longhorns defensive backs coach Duane Akina left the team to join Mike Stoops’ staff at Arizona. Though Akina had served as defensive coordinator for the Wildcats over a decade ago, he returned in a lateral move. The departure marked approximately the ninetieth lost assistant from Mack Brown’s staff since the close of the 2010 season.
Enter Jerry Gray. The Longhorn alum (and very public Longhorns DC aspirer) was hired away from the Seattle Seahawks the very next day, and our Texas community swooned with pride.
That new-coach smell wore off fast, however: Last Wednesday, the Tennessee Titans formalized their poaching of Gray to serve as DC under new head coach Mike Munchak. Where does a beleaguered Longhorn nation turn? Back to Duane Akina, of course, who’s safely and snugly in the fold in Austin and citing “family considerations” as the central reason for his return.
Got all that straight? Great. Time for a pop quiz!
