Janoris Jenkins, Florida Football Part Ways After Second Arrest Of 2011

Florida football coach Will Muschamp announced on Twitter today that troubled junior cornerback Janoris Jenkins would “move ahead to the next stage of his career” and leave the school. The announcement follows Jenkins’ second arrest for marijuana posession in the year 2011 and his third in the past 23 months.

The move marks a significant departure from the more lenient disciplinary procedures of the Urban Meyer era, and not one without serious roster consequences for the Gators. Jenkins was a former Freshman All-American and returning starter at corner for Florida, and would have been an integral part of a defense that will have to pull more than their weight as Florida rebuilds their offense. If Muschamp wanted to send a signal that his was going to be a very different way of doing things, booting his starting corner off the team is definitely a demonstrative way of doing so.

As Alligator Army speculates, the most likely landing spot for someone of Jenkins’ obvious talent at this point is the NFL Supplemental Draft. If he is not chosen in the supplemental draft, Jenkins will have to latch on to an NFL team as a free agent.
