Ereck Plancher Trial: UCF Will Appeal After Being Found Negligent In Wrongful Death Suit

Following Thursday night’s verdict in the case of Ereck Plancher, the University of Central Florida has issued a statement indicating its intent to appeal the decision. A jury declared the university responsible for the death of former football player Eric Plancher and ordered the UCF Athletics Association to pay his parents $10 million in restitution.

"We believe the appeals court will side with us," UCF spokesman Grant Heston said. "We feel that from pretrial rulings to ruling during the trial that there's an ample of appeal opportunity and we strongly believe that this will be a quick process because it's very clear that this was the wrong decision."

Plancher collapsed and died due to conditioning drills during at an official team practice on March 18th, 2008. The bereaved family believes the complications were a result of the sickle cell disease from which Plancher suffered.

UFCAA attorney Kevin Taylor firmly stands by the university’s intention to appeal, and believes that no party should be blamed for the death.

“Sometimes things happen in life and no one is at fault,” Taylor said following the decision. “Sometimes things happen in life -- and even bad things -- and no one is to blame.”
